If the Birds Take Flight

Ecstatic when you offered me
your gatorade on the street corner
sunrise strung out and my mouth was parched
from smoking cigarettes all night
bums stirring in lean-tos
packing sleeping bags to trek the city.
Cartwheeling heart when we slid down the embankment
because the maintenance crew
called to us as we were smoking a joint.
Small hum in my ears from the lowlit dash
in the nighttime on a road trip
to recover your car from police impound
dreaming of breakfast platters.
Gone, spent, blissed as a seer
errant highways, house parties, pastures and ranch roads
savages and we sensed savagely
though never noticed our path led
into some long and boring ambush.
